Leaded Soil Endangers Residents in New York Neighborhoods

 - City parks can be a haven for homebound residents looking to escape the quarantine blues this year, but an invisible threat might be lurking just below the surface. A new study describes dangerously high levels of lead in the soil of several parks in New York City. Researchers found that lead levels are highest in areas undergoing rapid growth and redevelopment. “We have over 36,000 people moving into these areas—and lead contamination in the soil,” said study coauthor Brian Pavilonis, a professor at the Graduate School of Public Health and Health Policy at the City University of New York (CUNY). “That’s a lot of people who could all be exposed.” - EOS

I am very happy that people are finding out about this problem in NYC. I am not sure if people will move, if this becomes a bigger problem, but this is a start. I wonder how many other places in the US where there is lead being found in soil. If this happens in Arizona, we should be worried.

The fact that people are going to the city of NY to get away from quarantine, and there's dangerous soil with high levels of lead in the parks that people could eventually be exposed to is scary. This article connects to our modules contents because it's explaining how the soil filled with high levels of lead greatly affect the people living in this city.

It is alarming that high levels of lead are being found in such a densely populated area. It makes me think of all the children that are likely visiting these parks and playing in the dirt. This article connects to module 6 because the lead contamination is a direct result of the population growth in the area.

This article speaks about the soil in several parts of New York City that could potentially endanger the residents around the area. Researchers have found very high levels of lead that are in the soil. The contaminated soils can be harmful to the people, children especially, since they are around it. Now you're probably wondering what's the big fuss about lead being exposed to the residents, well lead can be poisonous and obviously not good to inhale. Eventually if more people get wind of this, the population near those parks will decrease because of the scare.This connects to our module because it can affect the population of an area.

This article states that high levels of lead are consuming the soil of some of New York's most populated parks. Due to Covid-19 and the nation wide quarantine, residents have taken full advantage of a simple stroll in the park. What they don't know is that there nightly walks in the park could lead to lead contamination. Due to the rising number of people and development in the area, researchers are concerned this will impose a threat on anyone who comes in contact. This relates to are module on population because lead and population have a relationship, when the population increases then the lead does too. They are working together, but in this case its not in our favor.

Over 36,000 people who live around New York's city's parks are at risk of getting lead poisoned. The amount of lead in the park's soil is dangerously 400 milligrams of lead per kilogram of soil that have been accumulated over the years. Researchers are concerned that children may eventually become lead poisoned if they keep playing in the parks. In the past 10 years, the population has grown more than 20%. This article relates to the module on population because natural disasters and population rates are connected. The larger the population is, the harder it is to keep everyone safe from the possible dangers of the natural disaster.

Rapid growth and high development areas are showing increased lead levels in parks. Lead coming from legacy use in paint, industry and transportation has been washed into the soil and environment, putting 36,000 people moving into these areas at risk for lead poisoning. This relates to the module because the rapid growth following the industrial revolution is the cause of this problem we see today.

this article discussed how the levels of lead are rising tremdously in New York. All lead that is recored is developing underground in the soil of the city. This article relates to the module because in this lesson we are learning about populations all over the world and how growing or decreasing popluation makes an impact on cities. New York is an example becasue of the population increasing it is causing for dangerous lead to deveolp in the soil. This is dangerous becasue when wind levels are high or there is constuction happening all the lead particles are are being breathed in my people and they are delveopling high levels of lead in there blood.
