Climate Change Will Force a New American Migration

10/1/2020

Across the United States, some 162 million people — nearly 1 in 2 — will most likely experience a decline in the quality of their environment, namely more heat and less water. For 93 million of them, the changes could be particularly severe, and by 2070, our analysis suggests, if carbon emissions rise at extreme levels, at least 4 million Americans could find themselves living at the fringe, in places decidedly outside the ideal niche for human life. The cost of resisting the new climate reality is mounting. Florida officials have already acknowledged that defending some roadways against the sea will be unaffordable. And the nation’s federal flood-insurance program is for the first time requiring that some of its payouts be used to retreat from climate threats across the country. It will soon prove too expensive to maintain the status quo. - Pro Publica

After reading this passage, I'm honestly a little scared of what the future might bring. So many things are going wrong right now, and now this is possibility. I can see why people want the president to take climate change seriously.

This also relates to what I'm studying in geology right now. Learning about how natural disasters d the environment can have a huge impact on human life. Hopefully we will find a solution to this problem by 2070.

This article can be seen as scary to some people due to how our future may pan out. The fact that 1 to 2 people may experience an environmental decline in their home is actually crazy to think. We keep on hearing about how we need to change our habits now before it is too late, and now it seems that it needs to happen as soon as possible.

This article honestly scares me because we are not prepared for this type of change. They stated that the temperatures will rise and there will be less water which is a terrifying thought. In 2070 there could be 4 million American's living in places that are not equipped for human life. We need to be taking this information seriously so we can save future generations.

This relates to what we are learning because we see how the Earth operates and it's important to know that in order to understand the damage we are causing.

This article is discussing how this year natural disasters in the United States have been rampant and affected millions of lives, so it discusses the prediction of people moving away from these areas, like California, into different areas with less of a risk. This relates to our current module like in the example of the video discussing Portuguese Bay where they say that the landslides and shifting of the soil caused the population of the area to go down by 2/3 and the rest of the people had to get creative with a solution. Landslides are less preventable than wildfires though. Regardless, natural disasters can make a huge difference in an area's population as they directly influence the quality of life in an area. I thought it was interesting that the article mentioned that Phoenix experienced 53 days of +110 degree heat this summer!

I have heard things like this before in casual conversation with people. I remember my manager at work once told me he read that AZ will be uninhabitable by 2050. Now I'm still not so sure I believe this, but it seems as though every week theres a new report telling us how doomed we are. This relates to our module in the sense that seemingly the worse we treat our environment, the worse it can hurt us back. As we've seen storms and natural disasters have become more severe and more common in recent years. As much as we might not want to admit it, part of this is our ability to contribute to disasters like landslides that seem natural, but may actually have underlying human interaction causes. I feel though still, that climate change is indeed real, but at the same time that the outcomes of our behavior won't be a catastrophic as the news makes it out to be. Simply put, the news makes more money the more they scare people, and I know climate change goes way deeper than that, and it can have some very serious implications, however, I know for a fact that by the time I'm raising a family, the world will not be in turmoil, as there are just too many rich people, that want to enjoy their wealth, and they can't do that if the world turns to chaos. By then there will be a new thing for the next generation to worry about, that's how it always goes and I hope this is at least a bit thought provoking.

This article is about overall decline we will see in the future. That is, the decline of land to live on. With the increase of natural disasters and the unfortunate effects of climate change, many states may become uninhabitable.

I commented on this article for last weeks module, but it pertains so much more to this week. We are losing habits to rising sea levels and fires, this unfortunate has also caused our population to see a decrease. Having migrate will do so as well. Climate change will force us to really find a new appreciate for our earth, while we cannot prevent disasters we do need to educate ourselves to be prepared.

This article really resonated with me. About a year ago I had decided Phoenix would not be my permanent home. The depleting water supply, increasing temps and population makes me think this entire valley is unsustainable (at least for the current population).
I don't know where I'll migrate to, but I do know that I'll be taking geologic disasters, climate and population forecasts in to account. This will be in addition to the ability to live a more sustainable/carbon neutral lifestyle in that new location.

The article explains how as climate change continues to effect Earth many areas will become too hot and dry to be habitable for human populations. This is happening as natural disasters continue to change the environment and landscapes in many states, like Florida. In Florida they have already decided that continuing to fund building blocks to protect roads would be useless against the sea. At least 4 million people will end up living in areas that are not ideal living standards.

Almost 1 out of 2 Americans will experience some sort of environmental decline such as a shortage of water or extreme heat/rising temperatures such as wildfires. Now more than 50% of all Americans will be drastically affected by these environmental changes, as they will eventually have to move because of the dangers and risks associated with rising carbon emissions and climate change. If we take wildfires for example, people are being forced to leave their homes or risk dying to the fire. This means they have to leave behind most of their valuable possession. The same can be said for those living on the coasts, as rising sea levels threaten the safety of homes near the ocean. This article connects to our module on population as climate change has a huge impact on every population around the world. The same effects climate change has on the US, is effecting others around the world in a similar way, if not worse. For people living in high risk areas such as areas prone to wildfires or living close to the ocean, it would be best to try and relocate if possible to avoid the possibility of suddenly being effected by climate change.

This article really hits home with current events taking place. It is crazy to think that people will be migrating but when you boil it down that is exactly what they are being forced to do. Hopefully people will start to realize that we need to change our habits because mother nature will always win in the end.

This article is discussing how climate change is affecting places that we are able to live. We are learning about world population this week so this is directly related to our learning for this week. I found it extremely concerning how in 2070 there will be 4 million Americans living in places that are not fit for human life.

This article talks about how a "new American migration" stemming from the fact that population increase, along with the rise in carbon emissions. Almost 93 million people will see a decrease in overall air conditions by 2070. In my head, I cannot even picture a world where four million people are living under unideal living conditions due to climate change.
